USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a protocol that allows you to trigger a service by sending a message.
The advantage of UUSD is its simplicity to use and availability to all. To perform, a transaction via USSD, the user sends a code that connects him in real time to a telephone operator to exchange data. Unlike an SMS, there is no storage in USSD, the information is only available during the opening of the session and then disappears. A protocol that is certainly basic, but which does not require the use of a heavy infrastructure.
With the introduction and mass usage of smartphones across the globe, web gained more advantage over USSD. However, for a solution to be easily accessible in this part of the world where access to the internet is limited, it needs to be available on USSD.
With USSD, customers can perform a variety of banking transactions and other payment options such as fund transfer, bill payments, airtime top-up. USSD improves customer experience. There is no better customer retention strategy than including USSD to payment options.
SOME OF OUR USSD SOLUTIONS
Given the low internet penetration in Africa, we have developed USSD-based solutions to enable our customers pay for products and services at their convenience. This guarantees easy, seamless usage and accessibility by a large majority of the country’s population. Some of our solutions available via USSD include the following;
BILL MANAGEMENT
This solution facilitates payment of electricity bills, water bills, solar energy bill and MTN postpaid bills. To pay via USSD, users can start by dialing *126# on their mobile phones and proceed to browse the menu for bill payment and select service to pay for then finalize payment by entering their mobile money pin code.
MTN CARRYGO
MTN CARRYGO enables eligible clients to be able to take phones on loan and pay on a monthly basis by dialing *189#. The customer is then deducted monthly via MTN mobile money till the full loan is recovered.
FEES PAYMENT
It is now possible to pay school fees in Cameroon via USSD.
MINESECPAY
For MINESECPAY which is payment option for state owned schools , fees can be paid via USSD by dialing *126# on the MTN mobile money application and proceed with the following steps;
- Dial *126# on MTN mobile money
- Select pay bills/services
- Select pay school/exam fees
- Select fee type
- Enter mobile money pin
- Receive payment notification and receipt link
- Download receipt
SCHOOLPAY
For fees payment for private schools via USSD, parents and students can initiate payments by dialing *215# on their mobile money application and procced with the following steps;
- Dial *215# on MTN mobile money
- Select pay tuition/examination fees
- Enter pin code
- Receive payment validation and receipt link
- Download receipt.
UNIVPAY
For fees payment via UNIVPAY, students can engage payments by dialing *215# and proceed with payment
